Get Free Quotes 👑Every forklift has a rated capacity — the maximum weight it can safely lift — but that rating assumes a standard load center, typically 24 inches from the face of the forks to the load's center of gravity. When a load is longer, deeper, or unevenly weighted so its center of gravity sits farther out, the forklift's safe capacity drops. Lifting beyond the derated capacity risks tip-overs, one of the most serious forklift hazards.
This calculator uses a common estimation method — rated capacity multiplied by the ratio of rated load center to your actual load center — to give you a quick planning figure. It is not a substitute for the manufacturer's load chart or the data plate, which account for lift height, mast type, and attachments. When in doubt, always consult a qualified dealer.
The load center is the horizontal distance from the face of the forks to the center of gravity of the load. Most forklift capacity ratings assume a standard 24-inch load center. If your load’s center of gravity is farther out, the forklift’s safe capacity is reduced.
A common estimate multiplies the rated capacity by the ratio of the rated load center to your actual load center. For example, a 5,000 lb truck rated at a 24-inch load center handling a load with a 36-inch center has an approximate capacity of 5,000 × (24 ÷ 36) = 3,333 lb. Always confirm with the forklift’s data plate and a qualified dealer.
No. This tool provides a rough estimate for planning only. The forklift’s data plate (capacity plate) and manufacturer specifications are the authoritative source, and attachments change the rating. Always verify with the data plate and a qualified dealer before lifting.
